Hip and knee surgery
Southern Gold Coast Orthopaedics is the practice of Dr Jason Tsung, an Australian-trained orthopaedic surgeon specialising in the hip and knee. He manages arthritis, treats hip and knee injuries, and performs joint replacement, recommending surgery only when it’s the right step.

A focused practice
Dr Tsung focuses on the hip and knee, from arthritis and injuries through to joint replacement. Treatment is matched to your problem and your goals, and starts with the least invasive option that will work. Many people are helped without surgery; when an operation is the right step, it’s planned carefully and carried out with techniques chosen to make recovery smoother.
Joint replacement.
Hip and knee replacement, including partial knee and robotic-assisted surgery, planned around your own anatomy.
Joint replacementArthritis management.
Non-surgical care for hip and knee arthritis: exercise, weight, medication and injections, to keep you moving and to delay or avoid surgery.
Arthritis managementInjuries and conditions.
Assessment and treatment of hip and knee injuries, from meniscus tears to fractures.
ConditionsA considered approach to surgery
When surgery is needed, the details matter. Dr Tsung uses a muscle-sparing approach to the hip (the direct superior approach), an incision for knee replacement chosen to reduce numbness afterwards (the anterolateral approach), and alignment planned around your own knee (functional alignment). Robotic assistance with the Mako system helps plan and position the implant accurately.
Not every hip or knee problem needs an operation, and some that seem to often don’t. The advice you get here is based on the evidence and on what’s likely to help you, even when that means recommending against surgery. Our resources explain the reasoning behind the options.
Dr Tsung is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons with fellowship training in the United Kingdom and Sydney, and over a decade in practice.
